There are two types of HPV, high risk and low risk.

High risk causes cell changes in the cervix for women and can lead to cervical cancer. Low risk causes genital warts.

Genital warts and cervical cell changes are the only symptoms of HPV. There is no cure.

I work in dermatology and we treat this virus in our office. Its a good idea to see a dermatologist. If you have been diagnosed then you should find a great derm office that trats this. Some time the warts are distroyrd and the pt is given valtrex or just give one or the other treatments. This is a virus so it does stay with you.

Outside of getting warts there are no symptoms of HPV. There are 2 types of HPV: low risk which gives genital warts (though not all people who have it will ever get the warts), and high risk which puts you at high risk for cancer. Most women find out they have HPV when they go in for a routine pap smear and it comes back abnormal, the doctor then sends the sample back in to test for HPV. If it comes back positive for low risk HPV you really only have to worry about warts showing up (you can get them removed), but if it is high risk you will need follow up visits. If you are tested more than once and it comes back positive they will send you for a colposcopy and do and biopsy to see if you have any precancer lesions and how bad they are (though they may be able to see precancer lesions from your pap before doing biopsy). Depending on how bad the lesions have grown they will do a procedure to get rid of the bad cells. HPV does not go away but it does become dormant and in that stage it will not come up on a pap smear.
