Wart and Wart Care

What is wart?

A wart (also known as verruca) is generally a small, rough tumor, typically appears on hands and feet but also other places of body, which can resemble a cauliflower or a solid blister. Warts are common, and are caused by a viral infection, specifically by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and are contagious when in contact with the skin of an infected person. It is also possible to get warts from using towels or other objects used by an infected person. They typically disappear after a few months but can last for years and can recur.

Types of wart

A range of different types of wart has been identified, varying in shape and site affected, as well as the type of human papilloma virus involved. These include:

Common wart (Verruca vulgaris), a raised wart with roughened surface, most common on hands and knees; Flat wart (Verruca plana), a small, smooth flattened wart, flesh coloured, which can occur in large numbers; most common on the face, neck, hands, wrists and knees; Filiform or digitate wart, a thread- or finger-like wart, most common on the face, especially near the eyelids and lips; Plantar wart (verruca, Verruca pedis), a hard sometimes painful lump, often with multiple black specks in the center; usually only found on pressure points on the soles of the feet; Mosaic wart, a group of tightly clustered plantar-type warts, commonly on the hands or soles of the feet; Genital wart (venereal wart, Condyloma acuminatum, Verruca acuminata), a wart that occurs on the genitalia. Cause

Warts are caused by a virus called human papilloma virus or HPV. There are approximately 100 strains of human papilloma viruses. Type 1, 2, and 3 causes most of the common warts. Type 1 is associated with deep plantar (sole of the feet) and palmar warts (palm of the hand). Type 2 causes common warts, filiform warts, plantar warts, mosaic plantar warts. Type 3 causes plane warts, or commonly known as flat warts. Anogenital warts are caused by types 6, 11, 16, 18, 30, 31, 33, 34, 35, 39, 40 and others. HPV types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts cases. HPV types 16 and 18 currently cause about 70% of cervical cancer cases, and also cause some vulvar, vaginal, penile and anal cancers. Gardasil, a vaccine for HPV is designed to prevent infection with HPV types 16, 18, 6, and 11; it is claimed to prevent infections to other strains of anogenital warts through cross protection against other types of HPVs. HPV is associated with oral cancer, laryngeal cancers, tracheal and lung cancers.

Diagnosis and Treatments

Diagnosis of warts and their specific type should be made by a doctor or medical professional.

A variety of wart treatment methods exists. Some particular ones that may be prescribed are: salicylic acid, removal of dead skin cells on the surface (keratolysis), freezing (cryosurgery), laser treatment, curettage, topical cream, podophyllum resin paint, infrared coagulator, and application of certain other medications, chemicals, etc.

Genital Wart Facts

Genital warts are a type of wart that are only found on your private parts of the body. The genital wart is one that will be easily recognized. Genital warts are also known as veneral warts and also as condylmata acuminata. Warts in this manner are caused by a skin infection, which is known as HPV infection. It is possible to have the HPV infection without having genital warts. Genital warts are often passed along during sexual intercourse, but not all those who have genital warts are going to know they are infected until the warts are bigger and a little more painful.

Warts are a virus, that can be passed by touching, sitting and skin to skin contact. The most common types of warts are seen on people’s hands and feet, which are a different form of a wart but are generally the same thing if you are wondering what genital warts really are.

Warts are associated with the tumors that form under and in the skin. The tumors are forms of the HPV infection, and will form warts as the body rids the infection from the body. If you have warts on the hand or on the feet, you are not going to spread this to your genitals. If you know someone who has genital warts, they are not going to give you warts on your hands and the same goes the other way around.

For the woman, if you have genital warts, they will appear on the inside and the outside of the vagina. If the woman has anal sex, the genital warts could appear on the anus, and the same is for the man. If a man is having anal sex with another, the genital warts could appear on the anus area as well.

The warts will appear in the same area, taking a long time to spread out. Sometimes the warts will disappear on their own, but only in rare cases often times the genital warts will spread becoming crusty and become large areas of warts over the private areas of a male or female. If you have genital warts, and someone performs oral sex, the genital warts can be transmitted to that person. Genital warts can be treated by a doctor, and with medications. If not treated, often times genital warts can become troublesome not only for the person suffering with them, but for people you love and want to share that special relationship with.

If you have sex with someone that you later finds out has genital warts, you most likely are going to end up with genital warts as well. It can take anywhere from one month to three months for genital warts to appear and become large enough for a person to notice them. Always protect yourself by avoiding having sex with anyone you don’t know, or trust not to have genital warts.

Warts – The Various Types And How They Are Treated

Flat warts
Susan Fielding asked:

Warts are small rough lumps on the skin, and contrary to myth, they are not caused by touching, holding, or kissing a toad. Warts are caused by a viral infection in the outer skin layer called the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). They are a common skin condition that can affect virtually any part of the body.

Warts are most often transmitted from person-to-person contact. They are easy to identify and are most common on the hands and feet, however some can affect the face and other parts of the body. Warts are more common in children than in adults, although they can develop at any age.

Most warts will usually heal themselves within weeks or months, but some warts may take years to go away. This all depends on the immune system of the individual. Most warts are harmless; however they can be quite bothersome. Warts are also unattractive and embarrassing.

There are four main types of warts: common, flat, plantar and genital.

Common warts are rough, grayish brown dome-shaped growths that appear mostly on the hands; however they may appear elsewhere on the body.

Flat warts are usually found on the face, arms, or legs. These warts are named according to their physical description – they are flat on top and can be either pink, light brown or yellow in color.

Plantar warts are warts that appear on the soles, or plantar surface, of your feet. They are irritating and can feel like you have a permanent pebble in your shoe.

Genital warts are single or multiple lumps that appear on or around the genital area and are highly contagious. They have an irregular cauliflower-like surface. Genital warts are the most common symptoms of the Human Papilloma Virus.

Treatments For Warts:

There are various types of treatments available for warts. These treatments depend on the location of the warts, the age of the individual, and how long the warts have been present.

Over the counter treatments typically need several applications, and are only necessary if the warts are problematic. More extensive external warts are frequently treated directly with a variety of topical or surgical treatments. The warts are excised or cut off from the skin at the base.

Most warts are often cleared by the body without any treatment; however they can be treated depending on your individual symptoms and personal preferences. If you have warts that are rapidly multiplying then they should be treated. For the most part, warts are not usually all that serious a problem.
